The Reality
I've run my own business since 2013 — a retail service business, not a ute. Tools, jobs, quotes, timelines, parts that don't show up, and customers haggling the price after the work's done. Different shop, same disease:
- Enquiries going cold because I was flat out with the customers already in front of me.
- The same job typed into three different systems.
- Jobs that paid 3 hours and cost 2 days.
- Doing the right thing, helping someone out — then chasing them for the money while they stop answering.
- Everyone paid before me — staff, suppliers, landlord, tax man.
- And the lesson that took longest: some people were never going to be happy — and should never have been clients in the first place.
The harder truth: if the income stops when you stop, that's not a business. That's a job with extra steps. It was me too.

About
On the tools years ago — mechanic, HVAC, building materials, offshore oil and gas. Bookkeeping cert. Running my own business since 2013, where I learned most of this the expensive way. And since 2018, renovating my own place — so I've dealt with trades from the customer side too: the quotes that never come back, the calls that go nowhere. Most owners I work with turn over $300K–$2M and have hit the point where duct tape stops working.
